Bird Identification
During the
year 2010 we would like to expand our knowledge of birding. In
addition to our regular program, we will have a short
educational lesson on basic bird identification at each of our
regular program meetings. Though many of our regular members
are very knowledgeable at bird identification, we hope to reach
out to some new members by helping them identify common
birds. We will start with our April meeting identifying
Woodpeckers. The Downy and Hairy are very similar. What about
the Red-headed and Red-bellied? In May we will learn more about
Hawks. Can you identify the Red-tailed, the Sharp-shinned, the
Broad-winged and the Cooper’s? What about the Northern Harrier?
What are the differences? What do they eat? Where are they
found? Attend our regular meetings in April and May to learn
more about these common birds.
Bluebird Trails
In
2010 Potawatomi Audubon will sponsor 12 Eastern Bluebird Trails
throughout La Porte County. New trails have been added at St
John’s Lutheran School and Carmel Cemetery. We now monitor a
total of 86 boxes. Volunteer monitors check the condition of
the boxes throughout the breeding season and investigate any
indication of damages to nests by insects, predators, humans, or
undesirable competitors such as house sparrows. Monitors also
record and report egg production and fledging results, which are
maintained locally and also, reported to the National Bluebird
Society.
Mr. Ray Fear has generously donated his time and skill to build
the boxes and Donn Kelver has donated most of the lumber.
Current monitors are St John’s School Science Class, New Durham
95ers 4-H Club, New Durham Girl Scouts, Junior Audubon members,
PNCWA members, Elizabeth Roman, John and Mary Jo Pflum, Vivian
Dare, Joan Mills. If you would be interested in monitoring an
Eastern Bluebird Trail, please contact Joan at wisniews2@aol.com
or call 785-2765.
Community Involvement
This
year we will monitor Trail # 2 at Red Mill County Park. We
will be responsible for keeping the trail in responsible shape
by checking the trail for debris. We need to monitor the
trail at least once a month from March through October.
Anyone wishing to volunteer please email Joan at
wisniews2@aol.com .
